About Us

In June of 1878, a group of seventeen Ypsilanti women met to form an organization devoted to study and self-improvement. In an age where women were denied formal education or other outlets for personal growth, these powerful women took the matter into their own hands. This was the beginning of the Ladies’ Literary Club, which has been meeting continuously ever since.

Today, the Ladies’ Literary Club continues to thrive. Mixing traditions from the past with innovations of the present, the ladies of the club are continually reaching new goals to bring about a better tomorrow.

As we enter our 147th year, members continue to learn from each other and our bimonthly programs. Every year, the club’s calendar includes:

  • Fall Festival, in October.
  • Musical Christmas program, in December.
  • Gala Day Fashion Show and Luncheon, in April.
  • Social Service Day, in May, when members complete a community sewing project.
  • Annual Meeting, in May, to mark the end of the club year.

The club’s most important work is connected to several of these annual rituals, as well as raising money to maintain the house and giving back to the community through charitable donations and scholarships.

Mission

The objective of the Club shall be the mutual enrichment of its members through fellowship in an environment that encourages learning. The Club also serves as an energizing force for the good of the community through providing scholarships to local women, supporting literacy, and serving as caretaker of its historic 1840s Greek Revival clubhouse, among other good works.
