The Ladies’ Literary Club of Ypsilanti Michigan Foundation was created in 2000 to administer scholarship donation distribution. All donations are tax deductible. 

This year the Foundation will be awarding several young women (TBD).

The Sarah George Scholarship

The Ladies’ Literary Club of Ypsilanti created their Sarah George Scholarship on May 9, 1928, the club’s fiftieth anniversary. Sarah George joined the club in 1879 and twice served as club president, in 1882-1883 and 1910-1912. Sarah George, now 81, was present on that day in 1928 when the club announced they would be creating a “loan fund” in her name to honor young women graduates of Ypsilanti High School planning to enroll fall term at Eastern Michigan University. The club awarded the first Sarah George Scholarship on May 13, 1953.

Today the Ladies’ Literary Club awards two Sarah George Scholarships annually to young women graduates of any public high school program in Ypsilanti. Qualifications include outstanding leadership, scholarship, and community service, as well as attendance fall term at EMU.

Joan Willoughby Scholarship

The Joan Willoughby Scholarship was established in 1999 with a grant from Dr. Robert Willoughby in memory of his wife, a dedicated and beloved past president of the club. Joan Willoughby had trained to be a nurse at Temple University, in Philadelphia, and the scholarship is awarded annually to a high school graduate or a nontraditional student from Washtenaw County who can demonstrate unmet financial need and is pursuing a degree in a health-care field at Washtenaw Community College.

Barbara Weiss Scholarship 

The Barbara Weiss Scholarship was established in 2014-2015 to honor the memory of Barbara Weiss, a past president of the club and a giant in Ypsilanti’s and Eastern Michigan University’s volunteer community. Young women graduating from a high school program in Ypsilanti planning to enroll fall term at any university in Michigan or the United States may apply. Applicants must demonstrate outstanding leadership, scholarship, and community service.

A corporation of members from the Ladies’ Literary Club shall comprise the Ladies’ Literary Club of Ypsilanti, Michigan Foundation. Foundation Directors shall be appointed as needed at the annual meeting of all the Directors as stipulated in the Foundation bylaws. 

The purposes of the Foundation are to receive and administer funds primarily raised by and through the Ladies’ Literary Club to endow scholarships and support such other activities as shall directly and indirectly promote these endeavors. The Foundation operates as a separate entity from the Ladies’ Literary Club Board of Trustees and other Foundations associated with the Club and is subject to the stipulations found in section 501 (c) (3) of the Internal Revenue Code.
